About The Design

The Sundance Film Festival, located in Park City, Utah, is globally renowned for its exploration of the independent film genre, featuring a diverse selection of filmmakers. It is one of the largest, most prestigious festivals of its kind, spanning a multitude of genres and topics. The extensive nature of the event inspired the direction for the print pieces. The Sundance Film Festival offers a unique challenge in creating a uniform image for promotional materials because of its myriad of narratives and genres presented during the festival. The festival’s eclectic nature is captured by highlighting the quality shared amongst all its films—their ability to elicit emotions from the audience. To truly drive home this emotional connection, the pieces reference the 661 showings in relation to a number of emotional reactions that correlate to different film genres. All of this is tied together with the imagery of a filmstrip as a final reference to the medium of the festival.

About The Logo

I wanted to include the festival’s namesake in the logo, so I utilized the sun imagery while representing the festival's locale: Park City, Utah. Recognized for its picturesque snowy mountains, 7,000 feet above sea level, served as inspiration. To visually represent this, I abstracted a mountain range using repeating vertical lines to create a design that was abstract and geometric, but still captured the heart of the event.

To further evoke the dynamic nature of film through the depiction of movement and frames, I positioned the sun motif within the circular frame to simulate a visual reminiscent of sunrise and sunset. This motif is seen in various other design elements, including the tote bag and pole banner, offering a uniform visual language across multiple festival materials.
